Amoako Boafo: Egon Schiele repackaged & rebranded?

Post by admin »

I am sure he doesn't want to remind the Austrian master but the similarities are striking. Critical take on his work?

We live in a world where new styles are not possible anymore. This is not unacceptable to take something quite old and upgrade it with a new life. The similarity is present but Boafo has signature yellow backgrounds, slightly different brushwork of faces, and sometimes even more striking compositions than Schiele. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria for his MFA. His love for Schiele has an explanation.

A young artist with a strong specialization in portraiture. His works are characterized by the use of flat monochrome backgrounds, mostly yellow, and the use of impasto in the treatment of bodies and, especially, faces. Indeed, Egon Schiele used similar techniques in the treatment of faces, but more often frottaged paint mixed with impasto brushstrokes. Also characteristic is the use of patterns and striped clothes, which was also the case with Schiele. Schiele's strong influence is undoubtedly a mark of this artist's training at the Austrian Academy. Time will tell the direction of his subsequent development. It is difficult to say whether he will become a permanent figure in the art world; his may lack own ideas and personal brand. And so, undoubtedly, thanks to the connections and influence of Larry Gagosian, he is still sold and popular.
